I always get questions about what I like to snack on during the day on keto. The truth is, I’m a snacker and if I allow myself to snack whenever I want, I’ll end up eating nothing but snacks for the rest of the day and ultimately overeat.
Because of this reason, I only try to snack during movies or shows. Even then, I try to limit myself to one or two snacks at the most.
Berries are my number one choice for snacking. They taste great and are extremely healthy so I feel great eating them. The catch with berries and any other fruit is the fact that you can over do it! And it is extremely easy to over eat berries. Leave some carb space in your macros if you decide you’ll be wanting to snack on berries during the day. I would also whip up some heavy cream and top it over my berries before. I recently discovered heavy cream hinders my weight loss so I removed heavy cream from my diet in general, but that is also a great option.
85% Dark Chocolate
I love pairing chocolate with a sweet or even savory snack. I have a bar in the fridge ready to go whenever I’m craving it. I will usually have 1-2 pieces because the flavor is very intense and that will satisfy my cravings.
Zevia is a 0 calorie/0 carb soda sweetened with stevia and no other artificial sweeteners. I drink Zevia as a treat because even though it’s zero carb, it’s carbonated so it expands my stomach and makes me feel full. Zevia is a great choice choice to curb a sweet tooth.
This one needs to be pre-prepped but the health benefits are remarkable. I’m working a million different chia recipes! Just wait for that coming soon!
Roasted Sea Weed and Kale Chips
These are very low in both carbs and calories so they’re a great “safe” snack. I reach for these very often because they satisfy my salt cravings. I buy a huge pack from Costco every other week. It’s great for when you’re on the go! No food scales, no measuring, nothing! Just grab and go! It’s also great replacement for popcorn and small enough to be smuggled into the movie theater.
Nuts/ Trail Mix
Macadamia and pecans are my go-to keto nuts. They have the best macros for keto and are a satisfying snack. Just like the berries though, nuts are very easy to over eat so make sure you count them out.
Great snack! Cheese is a whole world to explore. There are different types, styles, and smells (LOL) you’ll never get tired of trying different types and they’re all low carb/ high fat! Win-win!
You can easily make bacon chips in the microwave. It’s super easy and takes 5 minutes.
Sweet or savory, there’s millions of recipes out there you can try. If you’re looking for something refreshing, try my Lemon Cheesecake Fat Bombs!
Snacking Tips and Tricks
Not All Snacks are Created Equally!
- Stick to whole foods as your primary snack options, some snacks and pre-packaged foods contain nasty ingredients that can spike your blood glucose and kick you out of ketosis.
- Stay true to the keto macro percentages! Every-time you eat, make sure you’re eating 75% fat 20% protein 5% fat. So, if you’re having berries add some fat to the snack to balance the macros (like whipped cream).
- Keep snacking to a minimum. At the end of the day, calories do matter! Nutrient rich meals are preferred. If you’re so hungry you need to snack you have to go back and evaluate what you’ve eaten during the day. Are you getting enough fats? If not, increase your fat intake to keep you satiated until the next day.
- Not sure if something will spike your blood glucose? Test it! It’s better to test and know than guess.
