Why you need this in your life, like yesterday!
I can whole heartedly say I was completely missing out on bulletproof coffee in the beginning of my ketogenic adventure, even though I didn’t think I was. I had never used fat in my coffee previously, the closest I got was a dash of coconut milk back when I thought fat was the enemy. The day I broke out of my shell was a real game changer. I couldn’t believe it! I was shocked I missed out on all the benefits of MCT for a long time.
I had stopped losing weight for two months and decided to incorporate MCT oil into my daily regime and the scale started dropping again. I didn’t change my diet in any way! -Some Woman on Reddit
The day I read this comment I was absolutely shocked! Eat more calories and lose weight? I had been maintaining a lazy keto diet for a while, my protein to fat macros were about 45/45. Was there something I was missing?
Don’t get me wrong, I know it seems obvious now but there is a huge misconception in the community about keto macros. What really is the correct way to do keto? I probably watched every YouTube video there is about the ketogenic diet. From doctors, trainers and professional athletes. What I ended up discovering is that keto works best when your fat to protein percentage is 75/20. So don’t be afraid of fat! One of the ways I knew how to boost those fat levels was through bulletproof coffee and I wanted to ingest the best type of oil to shred my body fat, MCT oil .
The recipe below can be changed or modified in many different ways. Why do I say this? Because, I always get questions about it anyway 😀
Hot or Cold
I love coffee and sometimes I want to change it up. I enjoy this recipe as a hot latte, iced latte and ice blended latte. It’s super easy to change things up!
- Hot Latte: Start with a hot cup of brewed coffee . If you’re using an espresso machine, you can add hot water or hot dairy free milk to dilute the espresso. Around 8 oz of fluid is what you want ultimately.
- Iced Latte: Start with cold coffee. Blend all ingredients and pour it in a cup over ice.
- Ice Blended: Basically a frapuccino. Blend all ingredients and ice together.
The best oil you can absolutely use in Bulletproof coffee is MCT oil. Don’t know why? Ask google. But in short, MCT oil skips your stomach and gets digested in the liver first. This means you get instant and long lasting energy (amazing, I know right?).
If you had to go with one kind of oil in your bulletproof coffee I would recommend MCT. You can ditch the heavy cream, butter, and coconut oil for the MCT oil.
- Coconut oil is great but I hate the taste of it in my coffee (personal preference), some people love it.
- Butter only works in hot coffees not cold
- Heavy cream tastes good but can POTENTIALLY stall your weight loss, so be careful how much you’re using.
Oil vs Powder MCT’s
Side note about MCT’s: I have both the powder and liquid form in my recipe. I bought the powder for my coffee, it’s great as a “creamer” but keep in mind it’s been processed with cellulose fibers and other junk, I realized this after I got it (duh!). Your best option is MCT Oil in its purest form. A tablespoon of the liquid oil has more fat than a tablespoon of the powder.
Quantity of Oils
Alright, so we talked about the quality, let’s talk about the quantity. This all depends on the time of day you’re drinking your bulletproof coffee and if it is a meal replacement or a “snack”. As a meal replacement, people use 3-4 tbsp of fats. You can play around with the amounts and see what keeps you full until your next meal, whenever that might be.
Warning! This is something no one talks about!
The first time I tried MCT oil, I used 4 tbsp in my bulletproof coffee. The coffee tasted delicious but even before I could finish my cup I instantly got nauseous. I’m not sure if I was nauseous from the excruciating pain in my stomach or the MCT oil. Regardless, I threw my life up then did research about how to properly consume MCT oil. Don’t be me! If you have not used MCT oil before and if you have a sensitive stomach, start with half a tablespoon of oil and let your body adapt to it before you up your dosage.
